The Alabama Workforce Council has released its annual workforce report. The report chronicles the ups and downs of employment and workforce development in a year that featured economic and social disruption due the COVID-19 pandemic. Alabama went from near full employment numbers in February of 2020, to seeing nearly one million Alabamians file for unemployment. Thankfully, Alabama’s businesses and industries have proven to be very resilient and the state ended the year with a December 2020 unemployment rate of only 3.9%.
Even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, Alabama’s workforce development programs continued to make strides in education and training programs that will prepare Alabama workers for a post-COVID19 labor market, and a number of special workforce development initiatives are set to be launched in 2021.
